Last week, I had the pleasure of attending a great workshop sponsored by Nokia. The workshop showcased Nokia’s cell phone N95 and what it can do as an all-in-one filmmaking tool.
This wasn’t your typical presentation, where a company representative shows you their products. Instead of them talking about the phone’s benefits, they got 10 local filmmakers together and let us play with the devices.
They gave us the following tasks:
1. Come up with an idea for a short video in 15 minutes.
2. Take the phone out and shoot for one hour.
3. Edit the footage down on the cell phone. The phone comes with it’s own editing application.
Additionally, If we used any talent on camera, we had to get a release form. We also had an hour to cut the footage down. That was it.
Here’s what I came up with. It’s a short documentary on the carriages rides at Central Park.
At the end of the day, most didn’t finished their cuts so they let us take the footage home to make our short.
Here’s a shorter version. This was cut on Final Cut Pro and audio was cleaned with Soundtract Pro. I felt it would be cheating if I color corrected and adjusted the video by stabilizing it and adding different filters to make the image better.
The camera/phone shoots video at 640×480, 29.97fps and the audio is mono 48.0KHz. The footage is saved as MP-4 video.
